Two-Time Youth World Sailing Gold Medalist Uses Warriors Baseball Academy for Off-Season Training

When you walk into the gym at the Warriors Baseball Academy, the last thing you would expect to see is a two-time Youth World Sailing Gold Medalist.  However, Charlotte Rose has been a unique member of the Warriors Baseball Academy family for the past six months.

Meet Charlotte Rose

Born in Thailand, Charlotte Rose was raised in Houston, TX where she attended Westside High School, competing in swimming and water polo.  Although being a member of the Gulf Coast Youth Sailing Association and U.S. Sailing Association, Rose's passion for sailing emerged when she was nine years old while attending a camp at the Houston Yacht Club, where she is a respected member to this day.

Accomplishments

Charlotte has proven she is one of the world's more elite youth sailors, and her list of accomplishments confirms it.

Rose is a two-time Gold Medalist, having won the Youth Sailing World Championships in 2017 in Sanya, China and most recently in 2018 in her backyard waters of Corpus Christi, TX.

"No one in the past 10 years has won this class twice in a row, so it's a great feeling" - Charlotte Rose

In 2016, the 16-year old Rose was crowned the S1D/KO Sailing Youth Sailor of the Year and in 2017, was named as a finalist for the 2017 ROLEX Yachtswoman of the Year.

One-on-One with the Gold Medalist

Rose has been training with Coach Travis Portillo for over five years and has been training at the Warriors Baseball Academy since last spring.  We asked her a few questions about sailing and her training regiment with Coach Travis over the years:

What has Coach Travis meant to you?

"Coach Travis has helped sculpt me into the athlete I am today.  He's become more than a trainer, he's like a friend."

Has he helped in any other way?

"Yeah! He has taught me how to take care of my body and the best techniques to keep those muscles feeling loose when out on the water.  I see a lot of sailors that have to give up competing due to knee or back problems and Coach Travis has helped prevent that for me."

Do you need any non-physical skills to sail?

"Sailing, like any other sport, requires athletes to be mentally tough and Coach Travis has tremendously helped me with that!  Day-in and Day-out, he pulled 110% out of me."

What are your top 3 (favorite) places or waters you've competed in? Why?

1. Oregon on the Columbia River Gorge - "A lot of wind"

2. Ft. Lauderdale - "Big Waves"

3. Kiel, Germany - "It's Germany c'mon"

How does our facility compare with others you've trained in?

"One of the nicest facilities I've trained in."

Next Up For Charlotte Rose

Rose will begin her campaign for the 2024 Paris Summer Olympic Games.  Make sure to look out for her in the news as she will be competing at both the international and intercollegiate level while she pursues her education at Jacksonville State University.
